Activity report from Workshop 2 in Lithuania:


 
This very interesting building was one of the first log-houses we saw in Lithuania in our first field trip. A granary at the open air museum in Rumsiskes close to the city of Kaunas.

  The joints on this granary are very familiar to Swedish joints in 17-18th century and it is also called "The Swedish joint" in Lithuania. The roof construction of logs is only known in a few medieval houses in Sweden.

    The church, built in 1707, has got     characteristic features of the traditional     architecture of the middle part of Lithuania.

    Acquaintance with Lithuanian regions'     (Aukstaitija, Samogitia, Dzukija and     Suvalkija) exposition. (represented by     Teodora Morkuniene and Rasa Bertasiute)

  14 00 - 14 30 The open air museum of Lithuania in Rumsiskes:
    Acquaintance with the exposition of     Samogitian region. (represented by     Teodora Morkuniene and Rasa Bertasiute)
  14 30 Departure to Radviliskis (the working place of the seminar is in this district), visiting the objects of wooden architecture on the way:
  15 15     Vilkija: little town- urbanistic monument     (the plan is preserved), built up with the     vernacular wooden architecture.
  15 45     The manor in Veliuona: the wooden     building built in the beginning of XIX ctn.,     the period of classicism.
  16 30     The Siline tavern: the wooden building     (renovated in 1999-2000) is used as the     administrative building of the Panemunis     National Park.
    The 12 minutes film has been shown about     the renovation of the building. The building,     the exposition inside it and the film has been     represented by V.Ganusauskas, the     director of the Panemunis National Park.
  17 30     Šiluva (through the window of the bus): the     little town built up with wooden buildings in     the traditional vernacular manner.
  19 00 Dinner in Šeduva (Radviliskis region) together with the representatives from the Region and Daugyvene Museum.

  The second workshop was held in the area of the Daugyvene open air museum. The museum is situated close to a creek in a wonderful little valley surrounded by enormous, flat agricultural areas in the Radviliskis region.

24 September Monday The first working day of the workshop

    1. Characteristics of the objects and         introduction to the detailed         documentation of the process of pulling         down. (Rasa Bertasiute);
    2. Introduction to the material of the work         objects in location (Egidijus Prascevicius         and Rasa Bertasiute);
    3. Detailed  acquaintance with the objects         (pulled  down buildings and         documentation) in the national groups:
    I. paying attention to the character of buildings (originality or similarity with other countries):
  -  the use of the      material;
  -  using tools and      working techniques;
  -  constructions;
  -  decorations;
  -  function (scheme,      system of      proportions, size).		 II. noticing damages; comparison with the situation in the other countries:
  -  definition of their      location and size;
  -  explanation of the      causality of their      appearance.
        4. Discussions in the national groups:         estimation of the objects and damages,         making suggestions about the program of         the seminar, paying attention to the most         important aims.

  19 00 - 20 30 'Theme evening' in Burbiskis manor:    Lithuanian wooden architecture
   -  Acquaintance with the books and items       about Lithuanian wooden architecture       written by Kl.Cerbulenas, K.Seselgis,       A.Jankeviciene, J.Gimbutas;
   -  Presentation of the documentary film by       V.Damasevicius "Disappearance of       Zverynas".
   Zverynas is one of the residential district in Vilnius, built up with small wooden buildings in the end of XIX ctn. and the beginning of the XX ctn. Today it is considered to be a place of prestige to live, that's why the old heritage is being destroyed by new buildings.

25 September Tuesday Second working day of the workshop

2. Definition of the program and its methodics     (Goran Andersson), forming international     work groups (Goran Andersson, Egidijus     Prascevicius):
    -  definition of the volume of the work;
    -  definition of the General Plan in        consideration with the main idea of the        seminar (introduction and experience        exchange)

   -   If factors of the seminar (structure of        teams, duration of the seminar, character        of objects, theme) suit to the general        program of the seminars.
   -  Proposals about the organisation of        seminars according to the experience        received during the seminars in Lithuania        and Romania.

    XVIII ctn.- the remains of representational     yard. Noble men's house from the same     period with the original roof construction,     wooden buildings of manors farmstead:     workers' houses, smithy, barns. The     architecture and the problems of the     farmstead have been represented by Telsiai     chief architect A.Zebrauskas.
  13 00 Open air museum of Samogitia in Telsiai:
   -  Brief acquaintance with the exposition;
   -  Demonstration of wooden chips making       technology (introduced by Gediminas       Satkauskas)

    This is traditional example of the wooden     vernacular architecture of the XVIII ctn.     The objects have been restored. Historic     characteristics and value has been defined     by the chief ethnographer of Samogitia's     national park Aldona Kuprelyte, restoration     problems- by master Jonas Serva from the     enterprise "Telsiai Master"
